These Bucky skulls were made with a 2 part silicone mold and polyurethane 2 part foam.  The rib cage section was also made using a silicone mold and por-a-cast.
While it is still fairly soft, trim with a paring knife any excess.  If you carefully cut material from between each knuckle the hand will be moveable (remember the wires which you inserted)  With time it gets very hard, all trimming should be done as soon as the hand can be pulled from the mold.

Frightfest BC

  Frightfest BC 2004

The first ever event of its kind in western Canada, held September 18th. & 19th.  Participants enjoyed seminars in "Corpseing 101: Canadian Style", "Severed Limb molding and casting", and "Bone making".  Ideas were shared and Dental Alginate was played with and enjoyed by all.  (To discover what we made with the alginate you must personally attend next year)  Enjoy the pictures below and plan on attending next year, same time, same place.

Peel of the clay and scrub with a brush under warm water if necessary.
Fill with Por-a-cast and leave for 5 minutes while it sets.
Carefully remove Bucky hand.  Cut some wire and place it in each finger and across the back of the hand.  Be sure wire is coming out wrist so it can be attached.
Which is the real Bucky hand and which was made in only 10 minutes?  The hand holding the apple is the 10 minute fake.  The small bones of the hand would normally be very time consuming to reproduce but with this method the results are easy to achieve.  The downside is that only one side looks real, the other is flat, but you usually only see one side anyway.
FLEXWAX  LIMBS:  Flexwax is a part wax, part plastic meltable product that can be purchased in 5 lb. blocks.  It is slowing melted in a double boiler on the stove.  Once melted it is brushed on or the limb is dipped, about 3 layers are appied.  Once hardened in less than 5 minutes, the limb is carefully removed, any holes or tears are repaired with melted flexwax.
When the mold is ready, mix a small batch of Por-a-cast (2 part plastic),  Pour the por-a-cast into the mold and slush it around the inside (wear gloves and do overtop protected surface, it can get messy.  Slushing is to coat the inside of the mold so by rotating the mold, all surfaces should be coated.  Por-a-cast sets up in about 3 minutes.  Next, mix 2 part polyurethane rigid foam and pour into mold.  This foam will expand in about 3 minutes and completely fill the mold.  Wait about 1 hour and then remove the wax and put it back into pot so it can be used again at another time.  I painted these with an airbrush.
Roll out a 1 1/2 inch layer of clay on cookie sheet.  Press the bucky hand into this to create impression, press deeply.
